How to Felt and Batten a Roof in Plymouth: A Step-by-Step Guide
At Eurostar Roofing, we understand the importance of a well-felted and battened roof in Plymouth. A properly installed roof underlay can significantly extend the lifespan of your roof, while also providing an additional layer of protection against the elements. In this article, we will walk you through the process of felting and battening a roof, highlighting the key steps and considerations to keep in mind.
Materials Needed:
- Roofing felt (preferably 1mm or 1.5mm thick)
- Roofing battens (typically 50mm x 25mm or 38mm x 25mm)
- Nails (galvanized or stainless steel)
- Slate or tile hooks (if applicable)
- Underlay (optional)
Step 1: Prepare the Roof
Before starting the felting process, ensure the roof is clear of debris and any existing roofing materials have been removed. Inspect the rafters for any signs of damage or rot, and replace them if necessary.
Step 2: Lay the Underlay (Optional)
If you're using an underlay, cut it to size and place it over the rafters, ensuring a 150mm overlap between sheets. Secure the underlay with nails, spaced at least 300mm apart.
Step 3: Cut the Felt
Cut the roofing felt into manageable pieces, typically 1-2 meters long. This will make it easier to handle and apply to the roof.
Step 4: Apply the Felt
Begin applying the felt at the bottom edge of the roof, working your way up. Ensure the felt is aligned with the rafters and smooth out any wrinkles or air pockets. Use a nail to secure the felt to the rafter, spacing them at least 150mm apart.
Step 5: Overlap the Felt
Overlap each piece of felt by at least 150mm, ensuring a watertight seal. Use a nail to secure the overlap, making sure not to puncture the underlying felt.
Step 6: Install the Battens
Cut the roofing battens to the required length and space them at 300mm centers. Use a nail to secure the battens to the rafters, ensuring they're perpendicular to the felt.
